How Do We Choose Fellowship Recipients?

Our Process

Reviewers

We rely on almost 200 senior academics from all across the United States who volunteer their time to evaluate between 125 and 175 applications.

Multiple Rounds

We employ a three-stage review process. In the initial round, all eligible applications are reviewed by two or three scholars with expertise in the subject matter. Those in the top half of the pool are reviewed by another two or three scholars who provide some constructive feedback on the research plan. The top thirty applications
are then reviewed and discussed by a final selection panel of seven to nine scholars.

Quality & Engagement

Our selection system is oriented to identify those applicants whose research is of the highest quality and who have plans to use their research findings to advance struggles for justice, equality, and sustainability.

Diversity

We are particularly interested in supporting doctoral students who come from groups that have historically been underrepresented in higher education.
