Why is Dissertation Support So Important for PhD Students?

The Importance of Dissertation Support

The Dissertation Stage Presents Distinct Financial Challenges

The final stage of doctoral study can be particularly challenging. By the time students begin writing their dissertations, many have exhausted earlier sources of funding and face the competing demands of research, writing, teaching, employment, and the rising costs of living.

For scholars pursuing ambitious research, financial constraints can have significant consequences. The need to work outside the university may reduce the time available for research and writing, interrupt scholarly momentum, and make it more difficult to complete a dissertation within a reasonable timeframe.

The Need for Dedicated Dissertation Support

Tuition support and university funding do not always cover the full costs of completing a doctorate. Teaching and research positions may provide essential income, but they can also require substantial time and attention during the critical dissertation-writing period.

Dedicated fellowship support gives doctoral candidates an opportunity to devote sustained time to their research and writing. By reducing financial pressures during the final stage of doctoral study, dissertation fellowships can help scholars maintain momentum and make meaningful progress toward completion.

Supporting Scholars at a Critical Stage

The CES Dissertation Fellowship is designed to provide emerging scholars with the time and resources to complete ambitious dissertations.

Each year, CES awards $40,000 fellowships to 12 doctoral candidates for a nine-month fellowship period. The fellowship is intended to reduce financial barriers that can interfere with dissertation completion and give scholars the opportunity to concentrate more fully on their research and writing.

For emerging scholars, this support can provide more than financial assistance. It can create the time, stability, and intellectual space necessary to bring a major research project to completion and take the next step in an academic or public-facing career.

Investing in the Next Generation of Engaged Scholars

CES views dissertation support as an investment in the future of scholarship and public life. By supporting scholars at a pivotal stage in their careers, we help create the conditions for rigorous, consequential research to flourish.

Our fellows go on to contribute to higher education, public scholarship, civic life, and their communities. Supporting them during the dissertation stage strengthens not only individual scholars, but the broader intellectual community in which their work will have an impact.
